HELPING GROWING SMILES DEVELOP THE RIGHT WAY

Sometimes The Best Time for Treatment is Before All the Adult Teeth Arrive.

Not every child needs early orthodontic treatment. But for some children, addressing growth and development at the right time can help prevent more complex problems later. At Hughes & Cozad Orthodontics, we evaluate how your child’s teeth, jaws, and bite are developing so we can determine whether treatment is needed now, or whether monitoring growth is the better option. Our goal is always the same: helping children achieve healthy, functional smiles through the most efficient treatment plan possible.

WHY ORTHODONTISTS RECOMMEND EARLY EVALUATIONS

The American Association of Orthodontics Recommends an Evaluation Around Age 7

By age 7, enough permanent teeth have usually erupted for an orthodontist to identify concerns that may affect future growth and development. That doesn’t mean treatment starts at age 7. In many cases, we simply monitor growth over time. However, some children may benefit from early intervention if developing issues could become more difficult to correct later.
Early evaluations help us identify concerns involving things like jaw growth and development, bite misalignment, tooth eruption patterns, crowding and spacing issues, and airway-related concerns.

MAKING EARLY ORTHODONTICS FUN

The Lil’ Hoots Club

Our Lil’ Hoots Kids Club was created to prepare your child for their future orthodontic journey. Successful orthodontics is a team effort, and your child is a key player even though they’re not quite ready for full braces yet. As part of the Lil’ Hoots Club, every visit to our office is an opportunity to earn points for cool prizes, so don’t worry—your child will have a hoot at Hughes & Cozad.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR DURING AN EVALUATION

Signs Your Child May Benefit From Early Orthodontic Treatment

Parents often ask whether they should be concerned about certain habits or changes they’re noticing. There are some signs you might recognize that warrant an orthodontic evaluation.

CROWDED OR OVERLAPPING TEETH

TEETH ERUPTING OUT OF POSITION

CROSSBITE OR UNDERBITE

PROLONGED THUMB SUCKING

MOUTH BREATHING

DIFFICULTY CHEWING COMFORTABLY

EARLY LOSS OF BABY TEETH

NARROW DENTAL ARCHES

SPEECH CONCERNS RELATED TO BITE DEVELOPMENT

Even if you’re unsure whether a concern is significant, an evaluation can provide clarity and peace of mind.

TREATING PROBLEMS WHILE GROWTH IS ON OUR SIDE

When Early Orthodontic Treatment May Be Recommended

Some orthodontic concerns are easier to address while a child is still growing. The good news is that not every 7-year old needs treatment. At Hughes and Cozad Orthodontics we have a conservatve approach and only recommend what is necessary, and early evaluations help reveal the proper path forward.
